Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my child need to be to begin lessons?

The preferred minimum age is 8 Years Old

Do you offer adult lessons?

Yes, we do!

What style of riding is taught?

Both English and Western riding is taught in MM Horsemanship Academy.

Are there weight restrictions for riders?

Yes. At this time, the riders’ weight limit to participate in mounted lessons is 185lbs or less than to

ensure optimal comfort for the lesson horses. Unmounted lessons such as horse care and

liberty lessons are still offered for participants who exceed the weight limit for riding but would

still like to enjoy horses.

What do I need for my first lesson?

Long pants and closed toed shoes—boots preferred. We can provide a helmet for your

Introductory Lesson.

Do you accept ESA funds?

Yes! ESA funds can be used for MM Horsemanship Academy Tuition. We can provide the

Attestation Form and paid receipt for your Introductory Lesson to receive reimbursement

through Class Wallet.

What lesson packages are sold?

Lessons are sold on a monthly tuition subscription paid with cards kept securely on Stripe.

Students may select from offerings of one or more lesson per week.

How long are lesson times?

For beginner riders who cannot yet ride independently, lessons are 30 minute private lessons

where the horse is already ready for the student. After the student has learned to get their own

horse ready and is able to safely ride independently in a larger space, the student moves into a

small group lesson with other students of similar level (typically 4 total). This lesson is 60

minutes including tacking and untacking time with a 30 minute ride time.

Do I need to get a helmet?

We can provide a helmet for your Introductory Lesson. Once the student is enrolled in a regular

program, the student needs to get their own ASTM-SEI rated riding helmet. We recommend

visiting Tack Solutions and shopping for one in person to ensure optimal fit. Bike and skate

helmets are not permitted for riding.

Do I need riding boots?

For your initial Intro Lesson you don’t need boots but can ride with

close-toed shoes. Once the student is enrolled in a regular program, they are required to have

appropriate footwear for riding. This includes western riding boots or English paddock boots.

Note: DO NOT get western boots with a thicker rubber sole (Western paddock boot types).

Boots need to be streamlined and with a heel so that the foot will not get caught in the stirrup

in the case of a fall. Boots should be well fitted and not too big.
